Another pixel ad, this one an unrelentingly upbeat musical! I’m not a fan of the musical format, but this ad is such sickly sweet over the top ridiculousness that it’s become one of my favorites. They played this commercial on heavy rotation during the stanley cup playoffs and the thought of this absurdly odd fey musical spot interupting the hockey game cracks me up.

The original script for this spot featured the line ‘like being pals with gandi’ and called for a scene where gandi and the main character play frisbee, but somebody thought this would be offensive for some reason and had it replaced with the line ‘like finding my long lost pappy’, which come to think of it rhymes a lot better with ‘oh what a day to be happy’ so its probably for the best.

Creating the machinery along the assembly line for this wrestling theme spot was great fun – all the little lights and rivets help create this fantastical sort of factory where proffesional wrestlers work assembling cellular phones.

It was interesting working with the WWE who had final sign off on the character designs for the wrestlers that appear in this ad: Rey Mysterio, Trish Stratus and Stone Cold Steve Austin. They were very specific about a few elements and easy going about others.

Apparently bell engineers get around – I guess it just goes to show you can’t judge a book by its cover. This is the first appearance of the engineer character ‘Stu’, but he shows up in future ads of this campaign.

Three soccer players attempt to escape from a mobile phone

The Great Escape. This Bell Mobility commercial for ‘games on your cel phone’ shows three animated soccer players trying to escape from a mobile phone.

This was the first of many pixel style TV ads I directed for a national Bell Canada campaign. This spot was produced at Global Mechanic with key design work by Toke Nygaard of Cuban Council.
