Game Show Network - Love to play?

Love to play Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud and Price is right?

Love to play Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud and Price is right?

This is the second group of commercials we’ve done for the Game Show Network, the first being the worldwinner scrabble cubes spot. We’ve taken these spots in more of a sixties pop-art inspired motion graphics direction. I’ll post video as soon as I’m able.

Ok.. Who wants to race?

Ok.. Who wants to race?

Vroom! Original Eggo got himself some wheels and he’s ready to go! These are two 15 second spots we did for a Kellogs Eggo / Wii Mariokart promotion. Aren’t you glad all your food doesn’t taunt you this way?

Scrabble cubes

Play scrabble online and be glamourous in a sassy sixties style.

Play scrabble online and be glamourous in a sassy sixties style.

This commercial for an online 3d scrabble game at worldwinner.com integrates flying cubes and a fifties design sensibility. We finished this spot just before going off to the Ottawa Animation festival this year, but it took a while to get the final logo approval from Hasbro, so I’m just posting the final now.

This was one of those rare jobs where the client doesn’t have a specific idea in mind and they leave it up to us to write, design and produce the ad. We came up with the 50’s fashion theme as a way to tie into the nostalgia of this classic boardgame and I love the way the 2d animation and design works with the 3d cubes.

Ottawa Animation Festival - Signal Film 2006

It\'s time to harvest the animation..

It's time to harvest the animation..

Here’s the signal film we put together for the 2006 Ottawa Animation Festival - whatta show! Towards the end there I go into animation saturation mode walking out of short film screenings in a daze trying to remember what I just watched. This was a great year being the 30th(!) year of the festival, and this odd-duck signal film was well-recieved. It’s jam-packed with a bunch of different scenes in various styles by a number of talented animators who are excellent people to work with.

Eggo - Knock-knock + tag

Hey! No peeking!

Hey! No peeking!

Just finished two more commercials from the eggo campaign, these are for eggo doubles. One is a standard 30 second ad and the other is a short 15 second spot. Kinda brilliant to include the product as the characters in the ad huh? Tragically we had to remove the fresh strawberries from the ‘complete breakfast shot’, as they would have pushed the calorie count over the legal limit.

Converse Mandala

A simple shoe becomes a kaleidascopic extravaganza!

A simple shoe becomes a kaleidascopic extravaganza!

This commercial for converse chuck taylor shoes was created along with the converse sky ad. The approach was to play with swirling animated mandala patterns for this spot and I love the way it turned out. This ad was done in a hybrid stop-motion style and composited in After Effects. I shot several rotations of a couple pairs of converse and then remixed and recombined them into these mandala forms.

I used expressions to drive the patterns and just watching some of the footage preview as I was working on was a mesmerizing trip.

Converse Sky

Ahh.... Puffy clouds, blue skies and flowers..

Ahh.... Puffy clouds, blue skies and flowers..

This ad for converse is pop-tastic and slightly psychedelic. Little colored dots swirl and bop in a cloudy sky and then bloom into a flower pattern forming a classic chuck taylor sneak. The design and animation on this spot was done by Celest Brown and is inspired by the fabric pattern on a pair of converse. This spot was produced at global mechanic along with the converse mandala commercial.

HD People

Dad... Why do the people on TV looks so much smoother that us?

Dad... Why do the people on TV looks so much smoother that us?

This was the last commercial we produced for the Bell pixel campaign - I like the self-referential script on this one. This ad was actually produced in HD format, and it was quite a treat to see those giant blocky pixels in crispy clear HD. You might not think that HD would improve the look of low res pixel animation, but seeing the designs sharp is much more like viewing them on a computer monitor - its ultra-mega-pixelicious!

Bell Canada moved on to advertising with the beavers frank and gordon after this and having just dropped them are currently in a transition to a new campaign.. Farewell pixel people, it was fun!
